It’s one of those things where psychologically you have to put yourself in a predicament, in a position, where you have no other option but to perform. You have to emotionally put your back to the wall and kind of trick yourself, so to speak, to feel that there’s no other option but to perform and to battle, when you have that, when you have that mindset, your performance shines through, your talent shines through. It doesn’t matter what the defense does. It doesn’t matter because you’re emotionally at a level that is above that. That is the mindset that they have to put themselves in.”

Do twice as much as the next fellow. Double energy. Double attention. Take double notes. Read double quantities of books. Double your exercise of your body, mind and spirit. Double your health program. Double your love. Double your input. Double your output. Double your solitude. Double your interaction. See double. Do double. Be double, and watch yourself achieve more than double the results in every area of your life.

It’s a fact that children with cancer have higher cure rates than adults with cancer, and I wonder if the reason is their natural, unthinking bravery. Sometimes little kids seem better equipped to deal with cancer than grown-ups are. They’re very determined little characters, and you don’t have to give them big pep talks. Adults know too much about failure; they’re more cynical and resigned and fearful. Kids say, “I want to play. Hurry up, and make me better.” That’s all they want.

I rode when no one else would ride, sometimes not even my teammates. I remember one day in particular, May 3, a raw European spring day, biting cold. I steered my bike into the Alps, with Johan following in a car. By now it was sleeting and 32 degrees. I didn’t care. We stood at the roadside and looked at the view and the weather, and Johan suggested that we skip it. I said, ”No. Let’s do it.” I rode for seven straight hours, alone. To win the Tour I had to be willing to ride when no one else would ride.

seesama auto on mul nüüd seina peal. kui õnnestub sügisel tulla tagasi hea tulemusega, olen kindlasti astunud väga suure sammu lähemale.

It was right then that I started thinking about Thomas Jefferson on the Declaration of Independence and the part about our right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. And I remember thinking how did he know to put the pursuit part in there? That maybe happiness is something that we can only pursue and maybe we can actually never have it. No matter what. How did he know that?

when i was young and i get an A on a history test, whatever, i got this good feeling about all the things that i could be, and then never became any of them

Veerpalust: inimeste emotsioon on tugevam kui ratsionaalne mõtlemine

tegin algust kolumnistina, päris vinge on kirjutada. kommentaariumis juba kõmmutavad ka, lausa lust lugeda. edaspidi võib spordi ja välispoliitika teemadel vast veel kätt proovida.

I’ve read that I flew up the hills and mountains of FranceBut you don’t fly up a hillYou struggle slowly and painfully up a hill, and maybeif you work very hardyou get to the top ahead of everybody else.” Lance Armstrong

He’s awesome. It’s like he isn’t even trying.
